Respectability
This work was created during the Center on Contemporary Art (COCA) Gener8 Residency, where I was given access to a store front in Capital Hill and eight weeks to create a body of work in dialogue with the community.
Respectability is an immersive exploration to recontextualize the narrative of oppression of Black women in the United States. The materials chosen are a juxtaposition of symbols of femininity as well as tools of violence. These pieces were made to address the unique experience of existing at the intersection of patriarchal and racial violence.
